Students from across Tennessee voted on Tuesday in the first ever statewide mock presidential election. Results showed Donald J. Trump as the winner with over 50 percent of students casting their vote for the republican candidate.

According to the mock election results on the Tennessee Secretary of State’s website, the mock election was administered in 479 state schools, both public and private, as well as home school associations. The mock election was open to grades K-12 with a total of 165,968 student voters. The ballots included all presidential candidates that will appear on voter ballots for the upcoming election on Nov. 8.

The statistics from the mock election show Trump as the winner with 88,208 votes, which accounted for approximately 53.1 percent of the total votes. Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton had 56,935 votes, which is roughly 34.3 percent of the statewide votes. Only seven out of 95 counties in Tennessee voted predominantly Democratic. Davidson, Shelby, Fayette, Hardeman, Madison, Bedford and Hamilton counties all voted in favor of Clinton. The remaining 83 counties that participated in the election voted for Trump.

The election results show that Gary Johnson received the most votes of any Independent candidate with 8,374 votes equalling 5 percent of the total votes. “Rocky” Roque De La Fuente and Jill Stein, both Independent candidates, tied with 2.3 percent of the votes, while Alyson Kennedy received 1.5 percent of the votes with Mike Smith receiving 1.4 percent of votes. A full breakdown of the votes per school can be accessed by going online to the Tennessee Secretary of State’s website.
